چکیده

Monitoring units for the measurement of highfrequency voltage transients have been in operation at three different busses of an Italian medium voltage (MV) distribution feeder, mainly composed by overhead lines, in March 2007 – August 2008. The feeder is located in a region characterized by a high ground flash density value (4 flashes/km/yr); many of the recorded voltage transients may be correlated with the lightning events detected for the same region by the Lightning Location System (LLS) CESISIRF. The paper presents some experimental results obtained using the monitoring units and their comparison with computer results obtained using a LIOV-EMTP model of the considered MV feeder. A procedure aimed at achieving the best fit between measurements and calculations, which takes into account the uncertainties associated with LLS data, is also presented.

Optimal reconfiguration of radial distribution system with the aim of reducing losses and improving voltage profiles using the improved lightning search algorithm

In this paper, a modified version of the lightning search algorithm is proposed in order to find the optimal reconfiguration of the switches and locate and determine the optimal capacity of distributed generation sources in the distribution feeder. The main optimization goals are to reduce ohmic losses and voltage deviations in the standard 33-bus and 94-node IEEE feeders. The simulation result...

Inferring the Correlation Between Lightning Events and Voltage Dips in Distribution Networks

To appropriately infer the correlation between lightning events and flashovers/voltage dips on real distribution networks, data coming from lightning location systems are certainly needed, but need to complemented on the one hand by data coming from distributed measurement systems able to record both protection manoeuvres and lightning-originated transients, and on the other hand by accurate ca...

Fault location and classification in non-homogeneous transmission line utilizing breaker transients

In this paper, a single-ended fault location method is presented based on a circuit breaker operation using the frequencies of traveling waves. The proposed method receives the required data from voltage traveling waves with the aid of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Wavelet Transform. Then, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) identifies fault type and determines its location. In order to eval...

Transient Minimization Within Static Var Compensated Distribution Systems

VAR support should be supplied as close to the load as possible to minimize transmission losses. For voltage control and for improvement of total power factor in a distribution system the circuit- breaker switched capacitor banks can be used. The problems with this solution are the voltage steps caused by the large sizes of the capacitor banks as well as the transients caused on insertion. Thyr...
